However, it is critically important to keep this feature of your property clean, safe, and healthy. It doesn’t take much for a pool to quickly become an eyesore or an unsafe place. Fortunately, with some simple routine maintenance, you can avoid these problems. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you perform regular maintenance on and around your pool.

Clean and Skim Your Pool Regularly

One of the easiest, and most important steps for effective pool maintenance is to skim your pool regularly. Leaves and other debris can sink to the bottom and stain the walls, floors, and finishes of the pool. This debris not only makes for an unsightly pool, but can also damage the equipment and structure of the pool.

Maintain Optimum Pool Water Chemistry

The chemistry of the water in your pool is one of the most important factors when it comes to the health and safety of your pool. Maintaining a pH level of 7.2-7.6 allows the other chemicals, like chlorine to effectively keep your water clean.

Post Rules to Support Proper Pool Hygiene & Safety

Common pool hygiene and safety policies should be posted in and around each pool. This list should include showering before entering the water, keeping food and drinks out of the pool, and that children should be supervised. Test the pool water hourly to ensure chemical balance per pool/spa code. Because the pools on your property are common ground, these rules can make them enjoyable for everyone.

Keep Pool Equipment and Structure Clean

The pool’s pump, filtration system, skimmer baskets, and more also need to be addressed. These components keep your pool operating safely and healthily. Your pump should run daily in order to “turn the water” over. This will mean a longer operations schedule in the spring and summer as the pool is being used more frequently. Your skimmer baskets should also be emptied often to help your system run more efficiently. If your pool has tile, this will need to be scrubbed and cleaned regularly to avoid the unsightly and harmful build up of algae.
