Pool Contractors in Baton Rouge: How Much Can You Save With the Right Pump? The pump in your swimming acts essentially like a heart.  And just like your heart, the better it works, the healthier you are and the better you feel.  Your pool’s pump is no different.  There are a lot of variables to consider, but making the right choice when it comes to pump selection can save you a lot of money in the long run, and keep your pool clean and working.

Let’s start with the basics; how does a pump work?  Your pool’s pump pulls water from the pool, through the skimmer and main drain, pushes it through the filter, and returns it through the main returns, back to the pool.  Now that we know what the pool pump does, what are some important things to consider?

Get the appropriate pump for your pool’s size

The size of your pump needs to match the size of your pool.  A pump that is too large will waste energy, and a pump that is too small will be overwhelmed.  A common misconception is that higher horsepower equals higher efficiency.  This isn’t the case, and in fact that philosophy can increase the wear and tear on other components.  An ideal turnover time (how long it takes for the pump to completely cycle all of the swimming pool’s water) is 8 to 10 hours.  So by taking the amount of water in your pool into consideration, you can select an adequate pump to meet this goal.  Your pool builder should be able to recommend the appropriate pump size, as well as other helpful features.

Ensure the electrical supply is compatible

Depending on the type of pump you select, it will have a specific voltage requirement.  While some pumps can be wired for any voltage output, installing the pump to an incorrect voltage can cause damage.  To avoid damage, underperformance and/or a waste of energy, it is key to ensure power compatibility.  Again this is where your pool builder will not only be able to recommend the best pump for your needs, but also install it correctly.

Opt for an energy efficient pump

Owning a pool is a commitment, not only in terms of time, but also in terms of elevated energy costs.  This is where the efficiency of your pool’s pump becomes so important.  Opting for a powerful, quiet, and efficient pump can dramatically lower your energy costs as well improve the performance of your pool.
